# Uric Acid

> This test measures the amount of uric acid in your blood, a waste product created when your body breaks down chemicals called purines. It helps show whether your body is removing waste properly or if high levels are building up, which can lead to painful joint swelling or kidney stones. Doctors use these results to help evaluate causes of joint pain, such as gout, or to check kidney health. However, a high level alone does not confirm a diagnosis of gout, as some people have elevated uric acid without ever developing symptoms.
