Bilirubin, Total

This test measures the amount of bilirubin, a yellow substance produced when old red blood cells break down, in your blood. It helps doctors understand how well your liver is functioning or if there is a blockage in the bile ducts, which often causes yellowing of the skin or eyes known as jaundice. The results help distinguish between liver damage, blocked ducts, and conditions that destroy red blood cells too quickly. However, an abnormal result does not identify the specific disease or underlying cause without additional testing.
