# Sodium

> This test measures the level of sodium in your blood, an electrolyte that helps regulate fluid balance and nerve function. It helps show if your body has the right balance of water and salt, which is useful for evaluating dehydration, kidney function, or heart health. Doctors use these results to help identify conditions involving fluid retention or hormonal imbalances. However, an abnormal sodium level alone does not diagnose a specific disease and usually requires further testing to find the underlying cause.
