Bilirubin, Total and Direct
This test measures bilirubin, a yellow substance produced when the body breaks down old red blood cells, and determines how much of it has been processed by the liver. It helps show whether the liver is clearing waste properly or if there is a blockage in the bile ducts, which often causes yellowing of the skin or eyes known as jaundice. Doctors use these results to help distinguish between liver disease, physical blockages, or conditions that destroy red blood cells too quickly. However, this test alone cannot identify the specific cause of liver damage or diagnose a specific disease without further evaluation.
