Bilirubin, Direct
This test measures the amount of direct bilirubin, a yellow substance produced when your liver processes waste from old red blood cells. It helps show how well your liver is clearing waste and moving bile through your system, which is often checked if you have yellowing of the skin or eyes. Measuring this specific form of bilirubin helps doctors distinguish between blocked bile ducts and other types of liver injury. However, a high result does not identify the exact cause of the blockage or diagnose a specific disease on its own.
