# Amylase

> This test measures the amount of amylase, an enzyme produced by your pancreas and salivary glands to help digest food. It is often ordered to evaluate severe abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting, which can be signs of pancreas inflammation. The results help doctors distinguish between acute pancreatitis and other urgent digestive problems, such as a blockage or an ulcer. However, because amylase levels can change due to kidney issues or salivary gland activity, this test cannot identify the exact cause of your symptoms without additional medical evaluation.
