# Hemoglobin (Hb) A1c

> This test measures the percentage of hemoglobin, a protein in red blood cells, that is coated with sugar. Because red blood cells live for about three months, this result provides an average of your blood sugar levels over that time period. It helps doctors evaluate long-term glucose control to screen for prediabetes or monitor how well diabetes is being managed. However, this test does not show daily blood sugar changes or sudden spikes and cannot replace daily testing for immediate insulin adjustments.
