Carotene, β

This test measures the level of beta-carotene, a nutrient found in plants, in your blood. Because the body absorbs beta-carotene along with dietary fats, this test helps show whether your digestive system is properly absorbing fats from food. It is often used to evaluate yellow skin discoloration or to help rule out significant fat malabsorption issues. However, this test cannot diagnose a specific digestive disorder on its own, as low levels may simply result from not eating enough vegetables.
