It is useful because when liver cells are damaged or inflamed, they release ALT into the bloodstream, signaling potential liver injury. This test helps show whether the liver is functioning properly or if there is stress on the organ. While it detects liver damage, it cannot determine the specific cause, such as a viral infection or medication side effect, on its own.
