> This test measures the total amount of carbon dioxide in your blood, most of which is in the form of bicarbonate. It helps show how well your kidneys and lungs are working to maintain the proper balance of acids and bases in your body. Doctors use these results to help identify potential breathing issues, kidney disorders, or metabolic imbalances. However, this measurement does not diagnose a specific disease by itself and is usually evaluated alongside other electrolyte tests.
