Glucose 6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase (G6PD), Quantitative, Whole Blood and Red Blood Cell Count (RBC)

This test measures the amount of an enzyme called G6PD that helps protect your red blood cells from damage. It is often used to investigate the cause of sudden anemia or jaundice, especially if symptoms appear after an infection, eating fava beans, or taking certain medications. By checking these levels, the test helps determine if an enzyme deficiency is causing your red blood cells to break down prematurely. However, it cannot identify the specific genetic mutation responsible for the condition or diagnose other blood disorders on its own.
