γ-Glutamyl Transferase (GGT)

This test measures the level of GGT, an enzyme found primarily in the liver and bile ducts. It helps show whether there is damage to the liver or a blockage in the tubes that carry bile. Doctors often use this test to determine if elevated levels of other enzymes are due to liver problems rather than bone conditions, or to screen for chronic alcohol use. However, this test cannot identify the specific cause of the liver damage or diagnose a disease by itself.
