α1-Antitrypsin
This test measures the level of alpha-1 antitrypsin, a protein produced by the liver that helps protect your lungs from damage. It is often used to investigate the cause of early-onset lung issues, such as emphysema, or unexplained liver disease. This test helps show whether a genetic deficiency might be the underlying cause of these conditions. However, because infection or inflammation can temporarily raise these protein levels, a normal result does not fully guarantee you are free from the genetic trait without additional confirmation.
