Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG), β-Subunit, Quantitative

This test measures the specific amount of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in your blood, a hormone produced by the placenta shortly after conception. It helps confirm pregnancy early on and allows doctors to monitor how well a pregnancy is progressing. By tracking these hormone levels, the test helps evaluate the risk of miscarriage or an ectopic pregnancy, where the egg implants outside the uterus. However, a single test result cannot determine the exact age of the fetus or diagnose specific medical conditions without comparison to previous results or an ultrasound.
