Cortisol, Urinary Free

This test measures the amount of cortisol, a hormone involved in the body's stress response, excreted in your urine over a 24-hour period. It helps show whether your body is producing excessive amounts of cortisol, which is useful for evaluating symptoms like unexplained weight gain, high blood pressure, or muscle weakness. Doctors frequently use this measurement to screen for Cushing syndrome, a condition marked by chronically high cortisol levels. However, this test cannot diagnose adrenal insufficiency (low cortisol) or determine the specific underlying cause of high levels without additional testing.
