# Prolactin

> This test measures the amount of prolactin, a hormone produced by the pituitary gland that stimulates breast milk production. It helps show whether hormone levels are contributing to symptoms such as unexplained milk discharge, missed menstrual periods, or infertility. Doctors often use these results to evaluate pituitary function and screen for potential growths on the gland. However, an elevated result does not confirm a diagnosis by itself, as stress, medication, and the time of day can also affect levels.
