# Calcium, Ionized

> This test measures the amount of calcium in your blood that is not attached to proteins, known as ionized calcium. This form of calcium is what your body actively uses for critical tasks like nerve signaling and muscle contraction. It is helpful for determining your true calcium status if you have low protein levels or kidney issues, which can make standard calcium tests inaccurate. These results assist doctors in ruling out disorders of the parathyroid glands or other mineral imbalances. However, this test does not diagnose a specific disease by itself and is often evaluated alongside other blood work.
