# Sedimentation Rate, Modified Westergren

> This test measures how quickly red blood cells settle at the bottom of a test tube to detect inflammation in the body. When inflammation is present, proteins in the blood cause red blood cells to clump together and fall faster than normal. This result helps doctors evaluate the activity of infections or autoimmune disorders and monitor how a condition changes over time. However, because it is a general indicator, the test cannot identify the specific cause or location of the inflammation by itself.
