Hepatitis B Surface Antigen (HBsAg) Screen, Qualitative With Reflex to Hepatitis D Virus (HDV) Antibody

This test detects a specific protein on the surface of the hepatitis B virus and, if that protein is found, automatically checks for antibodies to the hepatitis D virus. It helps show whether you have an active hepatitis B infection and if a secondary hepatitis D infection is also present. This screening aids in distinguishing between a single viral infection and a coinfection that requires different medical management. However, a positive result indicates exposure but does not confirm if the hepatitis D infection is currently active or measure the extent of liver damage.
