> This test measures the level of C-reactive protein (CRP), a substance produced by your liver in response to inflammation. It helps show whether your body is reacting to an acute infection, a significant injury, or a flare-up of a chronic condition like arthritis. Doctors use this information to distinguish between inflammatory and non-inflammatory causes of pain or swelling. However, because CRP levels rise for many reasons, this test cannot pinpoint the exact location or specific cause of the inflammation.
