Mitochondrial (M2) Antibody

This test measures mitochondrial antibodies, which are proteins the immune system creates that mistakenly attack the energy-producing parts of your cells. It is primarily used to investigate the cause of liver damage or inflammation. Specifically, this test helps show whether symptoms may be due to primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), an autoimmune disease affecting the bile ducts. While high levels strongly suggest this condition, the test cannot diagnose the disease by itself and must be reviewed alongside other liver exams.
