# Thyroid Peroxidase (TPO) Antibodies

> This test measures thyroid peroxidase (TPO) antibodies, which are proteins the immune system creates that mistakenly attack the thyroid gland. It helps show whether thyroid symptoms, such as fatigue or weight changes, are caused by an autoimmune reaction. This measurement assists doctors in distinguishing between autoimmune thyroid diseases, like Hashimoto’s disease, and other types of thyroid issues. However, the presence of these antibodies does not measure actual thyroid hormone levels or confirm a specific diagnosis on its own.
