It helps determine if you have ever been infected with hepatitis B, regardless of whether the infection is current or happened in the past. Since the vaccine does not cause your body to make these specific antibodies, this test helps distinguish between a natural infection and protection gained through vaccination. However, a positive result alone does not confirm if an infection is currently active or contagious without additional testing.
