# Zinc Protoporphyrin (ZPP), Workplace

> This test measures the amount of zinc protoporphyrin in your red blood cells, a substance that forms when lead interferes with your body's production of healthy blood components. It is primarily used to monitor long-term exposure to lead in workplace environments, indicating how lead has affected your body over the past few months. This helps doctors distinguish between chronic lead absorption and other blood issues like iron deficiency. However, this test does not measure the exact amount of lead currently in your bloodstream and cannot diagnose lead poisoning without a separate blood lead level test.
