Citric Acid (Citrate), 24-Hour Urine
This test measures the amount of citrate in urine collected over a 24-hour period. Citrate is a substance that naturally prevents calcium crystals from clumping together to form kidney stones. This measurement helps show if low citrate levels are increasing your risk for developing stones or contributing to recurrent stone formation. While it helps identify metabolic causes for stones, such as problems with how the kidneys balance acid, it does not locate existing stones or diagnose kidney disease on its own.
