It helps show whether you have the right amount of this mineral, which is necessary for your thyroid gland to produce hormones that control metabolism. Results can help identify if symptoms are related to an iodine deficiency or exposure to unsafe levels of iodine. However, this test does not diagnose specific thyroid diseases or determine the underlying cause of an imbalance on its own.
