This test measures the levels of nicotine and cotinine, a substance produced when your body breaks down nicotine, in your urine. It helps show whether you have recently used tobacco products, used nicotine replacement therapies, or been exposed to secondhand smoke. Doctors often use this result to monitor progress in smoking cessation programs or to verify nicotine status for health evaluations. However, this test cannot diagnose specific tobacco-related diseases or determine exactly when the exposure occurred.
