This test measures the amount of 17-hydroxyprogesterone, a substance made by the adrenal glands to help produce cortisol. It helps show whether the adrenal glands are functioning correctly, which is important when evaluating symptoms like excess hair growth or infertility. Doctors often use these results to check for congenital adrenal hyperplasia, a genetic condition that disrupts hormone production.
