# Iodine, Random Urine

> This test measures the amount of iodine in your urine to estimate how much of this mineral is available in your body. Because the thyroid gland needs iodine to make hormones that control metabolism, this test helps show if you are getting too little or too much iodine from your diet. It is useful for evaluating risks for iodine deficiency disorders, such as an enlarged thyroid, or checking for excessive exposure to iodine. However, this test provides a snapshot of your current levels and does not diagnose specific thyroid diseases or measure thyroid hormone levels directly.
