Nicotine and Metabolite, Quantitative, Plasma, Whole Blood, or Serum
This test measures the levels of nicotine and cotinine, a substance created when the body breaks down nicotine, in your blood. It helps determine if you have recently used tobacco, utilized nicotine replacement products, or been exposed to secondhand smoke. Doctors often use these results to monitor progress in smoking cessation programs or to verify that a person is not currently using nicotine. While it confirms exposure, this test cannot diagnose specific smoking-related illnesses or determine exactly how much tobacco was consumed over a lifetime.
