This test looks for specific antibodies in your blood that your immune system creates to fight the bacteria that cause syphilis. It helps determine if you have ever been infected, which is useful for screening or investigating symptoms like sores or rashes. If the first result is positive, the lab automatically performs additional steps to help clarify whether you have an active infection now or had one in the past. However, because these initial antibodies typically stay in the body for life, this test cannot be used to check if a previous treatment was successful.
