# HIV p24 Antigen/Antibody With Reflex to Confirmation

> This test measures both the antibodies your immune system creates to fight the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and a specific viral protein called the p24 antigen. Because the antigen appears in the blood sooner than antibodies, this test helps detect HIV infection at an early stage. It is used to screen for exposure to HIV-1 and HIV-2. However, this test cannot detect the virus immediately after exposure, and any positive result requires a specific follow-up test to confirm the diagnosis.
