> This test measures IgG antibodies to the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), which are proteins your immune system creates after being exposed to the virus. Because these antibodies typically remain in your body for life, the test helps show whether you have had a past infection, such as mononucleosis (mono). This information assists doctors in determining your history of exposure to the virus. However, since these antibodies persist in healthy individuals, a positive result does not by itself diagnose a current, active infection.
