This test detects IgM antibodies to Cytomegalovirus (CMV), which are specific proteins the immune system produces early in response to an infection. It helps show whether a person has a recent or active CMV infection, often investigated when symptoms like fever or fatigue are present. This measurement assists doctors in distinguishing a new infection from a past exposure. However, it cannot determine the exact severity of the illness or precisely when the infection began, as these antibodies can remain detectable for months.
