# Protein C, Functional

> This test measures the activity of Protein C, a substance in your blood that helps control clotting. It helps show whether your body has enough active Protein C to stop blood clots from forming when they shouldn't. Doctors use this measurement to help identify or rule out a clotting disorder known as Protein C deficiency. However, this test cannot determine the exact genetic cause of a deficiency on its own, and results may be affected if you are currently taking certain blood-thinning medications.
