> This test measures very low levels of C-reactive protein (CRP), a substance released by the liver when there is inflammation in the body. It helps doctors estimate your risk of developing cardiovascular disease, such as a heart attack or stroke, by detecting subtle irritation in your blood vessels. While it provides important information about your long-term heart health, this test cannot diagnose a specific condition or locate the source of inflammation, as levels can also rise from minor infections or injuries.
