Pancreatic Elastase, Fecal
This test measures the amount of elastase, a digestive enzyme produced by the pancreas, found in a stool sample. It helps show whether your pancreas is releasing enough enzymes to break down food properly, which is useful for evaluating unexplained weight loss or chronic digestive issues. Measuring these levels helps doctors determine if your symptoms are caused by exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI). However, while it detects low enzyme levels, it cannot identify the specific underlying cause of the pancreatic damage on its own.
