> This test measures the level of a protein that carries and controls insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), a substance vital for tissue growth and development. Because your body makes this protein in response to growth hormone, the test helps show whether your pituitary gland is functioning correctly. It is frequently used to help identify growth disorders, such as growth hormone deficiency or conditions involving excessive growth. However, this test cannot provide a final diagnosis on its own, as results can also be influenced by nutrition and liver or kidney health.
