Neuron-specific Enolase (NSE)
This test measures the level of neuron-specific enolase (NSE), a protein found in nerve cells and certain hormone-producing cells. It is most often used to monitor the progression or treatment response of specific cancers, such as small cell lung cancer and neuroendocrine tumors. While high levels can indicate tumor activity, this test cannot diagnose cancer by itself because other medical conditions or damage to blood cells during collection can also affect the results.
