Glutamic Acid Decarboxylase (GAD) Autoantibody

This test measures the level of antibodies targeting glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD), an enzyme found in the pancreas cells that make insulin. It helps show whether the immune system is mistakenly attacking the pancreas, which is a key indicator of type 1 diabetes. This distinction helps doctors differentiate autoimmune diabetes from type 2 diabetes. However, this test does not measure current blood sugar levels or determine how much insulin the body is still able to produce.
