Cholinesterase, Plasma
This test measures the activity of plasma cholinesterase, an enzyme in your blood that helps break down certain chemicals. It is primarily used to determine if your body can safely process specific muscle relaxants used during surgery or to detect recent exposure to organophosphate pesticides. This information helps doctors understand risks for prolonged paralysis after anesthesia or confirm suspected chemical poisoning. However, this test alone cannot distinguish between a genetic trait and chemical exposure, nor does it diagnose underlying liver disease.
