# Bacterial Vaginosis, Sialidase Activity

> This test measures the activity of sialidase, an enzyme produced by specific bacteria often found in the vagina. It helps show whether there is an overgrowth of these bacteria, which is common in cases of bacterial vaginosis involving symptoms like discharge or odor. By detecting this enzyme, the test helps distinguish bacterial vaginosis from other vaginal infections. It does not, however, identify the specific bacterial species present or diagnose sexually transmitted diseases.
