Glial Fibrillary Acid Protein (GFAP), Plasma
This test measures the level of Glial Fibrillary Acidic Protein (GFAP), a substance released into the blood when specific support cells in the brain are injured. It helps show whether there is active damage or inflammation in the nervous system, which is often checked after head trauma or in suspected neurological decline. This measurement helps confirm if physical brain stress is present, distinguishing it from conditions that do not damage these cells. However, it cannot diagnose a specific disease, such as Alzheimer’s or a specific type of stroke, on its own.
