This test measures the level of DHEA sulfate, a hormone made by the adrenal glands that acts as a building block for male and female sex hormones. It is often used to investigate symptoms of too much male hormone, such as excess facial hair, acne, or irregular periods. This measurement helps doctors distinguish between adrenal gland disorders and issues originating in the ovaries or testicles. While it identifies the source of the hormone, it does not diagnose a specific disease on its own and usually requires further testing.
