Macroprolactin
This test measures the presence of macroprolactin, which occurs when prolactin hormone molecules clump together into large, inactive forms. It helps show whether a high prolactin result is due to active hormones that cause symptoms or these harmless clumps that do not affect your health. This distinction helps rule out a false diagnosis of hyperprolactinemia, potentially avoiding unnecessary medication or MRI scans. However, it does not determine the underlying cause of high prolactin if the active form is actually elevated.
