Insulin, Free and Total

This test measures the amount of active "free" insulin in your blood compared to the total amount, which includes insulin bound to antibodies. It is primarily used for patients on insulin therapy to determine if the body's immune system is trapping the medication and preventing it from working. This helps explain unexpected high or low blood sugar levels by distinguishing between dosage issues and antibody interference. However, this test does not diagnose diabetes itself or identify the specific type of antibody present.
