This test detects genetic material from 14 specific types of the human papillomavirus (HPV) known to increase the risk of cervical cancer. It helps identify current infections with these high-risk viral strains, specifically pinpointing types 16 and 18, which are most strongly linked to serious cell changes. This screening helps doctors determine if you are at higher risk for developing cervical precancer or cancer compared to those without the virus. However, a positive result only indicates the presence of the virus and does not diagnose cancer or confirm that cell damage has already occurred.
