Bone-specific Alkaline Phosphatase (BAP)

This test measures the level of bone-specific alkaline phosphatase, an enzyme produced by the cells that build your bones. It helps show how fast your bones are rebuilding, which is useful for monitoring the effectiveness of treatments for osteoporosis or Paget’s disease. By focusing on this specific form of the enzyme, the test helps confirm that enzyme levels are related to your skeleton rather than your liver. However, it does not diagnose a specific bone disease by itself and results can sometimes be less accurate if you have significant liver problems.
