This test measures the specific amount of HIV-1 genetic material in your blood, a value often called your viral load. It helps show how active the virus is and how well HIV medications are working to keep the infection under control. This measurement allows doctors to see if the virus is multiplying or if it has been suppressed to low levels. However, this test tracks the amount of virus present and does not measure the specific damage the virus has caused to your immune system.
