This test measures the specific amount of HIV-1 genetic material, often called the viral load, in your blood. It is primarily used to monitor how well HIV treatment is working to suppress the virus and keep levels low. This measurement helps doctors determine if the virus is under control or if it is actively multiplying. While it tracks the amount of virus, it does not measure the strength of your immune system or the specific damage caused by the infection.
